Dave Berry

Sheffield has long since proved to be a fertile breeding ground for musical talent- from the Human Leaque, ABC and Def Leppard in the 80s to Pulp and Moloko in the 90s and more recently the Arctic Monkeys and Richard Hawley. But back in the 60s, the city of steel only reared two genuine stars; Joe Cocker, and the enigmatic Dave Berry.

Inspired by rock and roll Dave made his breakthrough at the height of the Beat boom, joining the Rolling Stones at Decca- and in the charts with Chuck Berry covers, But where Jagger had the swagger, Dave’s stage appeal lay in his theatrical stage persona which lent him a mysterious even sinister appeal.

Berry had his fair share of hits—‘’The Crying Game’’ to the cute pop of ‘’Little Things’’and the sweet scented charm of “ Mama”.

Among other accolades, Dave was huge in Holland and Belgium –and the fact he stayed with Decca until 1970, recording over 100 tracks for the label, is testament to his enduring appeal on the continent.
